After securing Ph. D. degree - for his researches on the earnest phase of the history of Indian shipping - from Mumbai University in 1964, Dr. Hariharan's professional career spanned over four decades in leading shipping organisations, the last being the Scindia Steam Navigation Co. Ltd. wherefrom be retired as a senior executive (research) in 1988. Presently he is a practising consultant in shipping management and training.
Dr. Hariharan is an ardent researcher and has written six books, edited two volumes and contributed over 60 research papers / articles on shipping and allied fields. The fourth edition of his book `Containerisation and Multimodal Transport in India' will be released soon.
He is a popular visiting faculty lecturing on shipping management subjects in nautical, marine engineering colleges and in management institutes in and outside Mumbai since years. He has specialised in history and development of ocean transport, economics of sea transport, commercial, technological and legal aspects of shipping, containerisation and multimodal transport.
Dr. Hariharan was on the Board of Container Corporation of India during 1996-98. He served as national coordinator for India in UNCTAD's training project on shipping for eight years and helped in imparting training to numerous shipping executives.
His services were recognised by the World Trade Institute of World Trade Centre, Mumbai, by presenting him Best Faculty - 1997 - Award. Further, the Indian Institute of Materials Management awarded him at national level `Best faculty of 2000'
