About the Book

WTO came into existence on January 1,1995. With its creation, multilateral trade has entered a new phase. Issues such as intellectual property rights, investment measures, trade in service, agriculture policies and multi-fibre agreement have appeared on the agenda of international trade. The global trade arena is littered with the most comprehensive and complex agreements and rules formulated by the powerful players. India has failed to comprehend these multilateral trade rules as well as their backlash on Indian economy and trade. Instead of now complaining about dilution of our sovereignty - which we voluntarily globalised way back in 1994 - let us face the challenges intelligently. Even now there are sufficient safeguards in the WTO agreements to protect our interests. Let not our incomplete and imperfect knowledge of global trade rules prevent us from using these agreements to our advantages. So, what is basically required is an understanding of these new global trade rules. This book serves that need. The object of the book is to scan the vital WTO agreements; assess their implications on national interest; and to suggest the line of action in future multilateral trade talks.
